Aggregates industry spared from provisions
of new mine safety bill
At a full House Education and Labor Committee markup of proposed mine safety legislation, surface and underground aggregates mines were excluded from potentially devastating provisions, the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association says. The provisions are designed to prevent reoccurrences of disasters like the Upper Big Branch coal mine tragedy in West Virginia in April.

Construction employment shows signs of stabilizing
Construction employment edged closer to stabilizing in June, as half the states added construction jobs or kept the same number as in May, the Associated General Contractors reported in an analysis of federal employment data. Compared to June 2009, construction employment rose in six states, the largest number of states to post year-over-year increases since October 2008.

Knife River Corp. CEO to testify before congressional committee
Knife River Corp. President and CEO Bill Schneider will testify today before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. The committee will hold its hearing, Regarding Recovery Act: Progress Report for Transportation Infrastructure Investments, at 10 a.m. in Washington, D.C. Schneider is testifying on behalf of Knife River and also as the NSSGA chairman of the board. His testimony covers the positive impact the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act stimulus money had on the construction industry, but also urges the committee to help pass a long-term highway funding bill.
MoDOT: New highway construction program insufficient
The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission approved the state’s new five-year highway construction program. Only one-third the size of the 2009 program, it barely has enough funds to take care of the existing system, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation. Missourians will see very few new projects during the next few years that expand the system and make it safer.

Deere increases standard warranty coverage
With a down economy still challenging Deere’s customers, the company has responded by increasing standard warranty coverage on new construction equipment in the United States and Canada. The free, basic warranty has changed from six to 12 months. Deere’s basic, no-deductible 12-month warranty also “travels” with the machine if the equipment is sold to another party.
