The
Importance of Measurements—and Measurement Expertise
Accurate measurements and good measurement practices
are starting to get the attention they deserve as QA approaches such as Six-Sigma
are increasingly adopted in process plants. Quality assurance pays--and so
does thoughtful selection and informed application of measurement devices.
Unfortunately, another development is eating away
at the foundation of this progress. continued

for Advanced Sensing
To broaden its digital signal controller portfolio,
Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) announced four new members of its TMS320C2000
platform optimized for intelligent sensor control plus motor control and
digital power conversion. The controllers are targeted to industrial, appliance,
automotive, medical, and consumer applications. continued
Artificial Muscle Introduces
Electroactive Polymer Actuators
Artificial Muscle Inc., (AMI) has introduced what
it calls the world's first standard electroactive polymer actuators. The
Universal Muscle Actuator (UMA) applies AMI's patented technology to replace
conventional actuators used in sensors and numerous other devices and machines. continued
New Technology Broadens
Access to High Sensitivity Raman Spectroscopy
Ocean Optics has agreed to co-brand and distribute
Raman spectrometer systems based on Centice Corp.'s patent-pending Multimodal
Multiplex Spectroscopy (MMS) technology, which Ocean Optics says is "revolutionary"
and makes high-sensitivity spectroscopy broadly accessible. continued
