Preparing for Chance — A Geospatial
Event of Olympic Proportions

The 2006 Olympic Winter Games and the IX Paralympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy, provided the world with its share of spectacular victories and stunning upsets. But most spectacular for those agencies involved in the event was that the biggest controversy of the games came down to the concern over a name — should the world refer to the host city as Torino or Turin?

The fact that a toponym controversy was the overriding concern for organizers highlights the reality that the 2006 Olympic games took place without incident. Credit, of course, needs to be given to the outstanding security preparations of the Italian government, facilitated in part by a geointelligence (Geoint) package provided by its Instituto Geografico Militare (IGM).   read more»

Microsoft and NGA Announce Virtual Earth Alliance
Microsoft Corp. and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) have signed an agreement to put the Microsoft Virtual Earth platform at the helm of NGA’s geospatial support efforts for humanitarian, peacekeeping, and national-security initiatives.

Microsoft’s Virtual Earth platform provides an integrated set of online mapping and search services that deliver imagery through programmable application programming interfaces. By continuing to explore visualization concepts and develop user-requested imagery-related services, NGA and Microsoft will collaborate to provide enhanced geospatial services to their respective customers.  read more»

Royal Air Force Augments Satellite Warning Service
The United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force’s (RAF) Fylingdales’ long-range radar station will now use Analytical Graphics, Inc. (AGI) software to enhance its Satellite Warning Service (SWSUK). The new software is designed to increase the SWSUK's ability to analyze satellite data and distribute reports to U.K. Ministry of Defence clients.  read more»
