Community Bits: Early Edition Exclusives

Empresas Públicas de Medellín E.S.P. (EEPPM), Columbia’s largest multi-utility company, has selected Bentley Systems as its sole software provider for water distribution modeling solutions. EEPPM will use Bentley’s WaterGEMS to support a ten-year master plan to reduce water loss and improve the reliability of its water supply system.

The Council of Development and Reconstruction (CDR) in Lebanon has chosen to deploy multiple licenses of InfoWater Suite, MWH Soft’s infrastructure modeling and optimization software, at the water authorities of Beirut, Mount Lebanon, and the Bekaa. CDR plans to use the software to support the establishment of a more advanced, complete information system that will facilitate daily operations in the water authorities.

NovAtel Inc. has begun shipping the first production runs of its OEMV GPS receivers, meeting previously announced delivery commitments. These first shipments include a custom variant to Leica Geosystems; Leica’s GPS 1200 GG series products feature NovAtel’s new OEMV GPS+GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System) technology.

GeoDecisions was named 2006 Technology Company of the Year at the Technology Council of Central Pennsylvania’s 14th Annual Awards Gala. The award is presented to a leading company in the region that demonstrates excellence in making technology work for the betterment of the company and the industry. GeoDecisions was also recognized in the Best Application of Technology awards category, which honors an organization that has creatively applied existing technology.

Photo Science and the South Florida Water Management District have signed a
3-year contract for geospatial services to support scientific and technical initiatives, including the comprehensive Everglades Restoration. The contract is part of the district’s larger Science and Technology Services Program, which covers several disciplines ranging from biological monitoring to GIS/remote sensing and wildlife consultation.

Sierra Atlantic Ltd., the sole Indian distributor for RSI, has received certification for ENVI to be used to process data from the CARTOSAT-1 satellite. The Indian satellite provides stereo data suitable for advanced and large-scale mapping applications with its two panchromatic cameras, which have a spatial resolution of 2.5 meters. The data are also a source for generation of digital terrain models and digital elevation models (DEMs). The certification states that ENVI complies with three major processing steps necessary to create DEMs: product import and image processing, single image triangulation, and stereo pair triangulation.

GeoSpatial Experts has released version 4.0 of its GPS-Photo Link digital image mapping software, which now allows users to display their digital photographs in the Google Earth environment. The new version enables users to display their photo locations as icons in a Google Earth map layer, and then add an arrow indicating the direction in which the photo was taken. This direction information can be input manually or extracted automatically by GPS-Photo Link from a Ricoh digital camera.

Optech Incorporated has formed a strategic partnership between its Industrial & 3D Imaging Division and Applied Imagery. Optech will provide Applied Imagery’s QT Modeler software with Automated Alignment functionality as a standard tool in its own line of Intelligent Laser Ranging and Imaging Systems (ILRIS). This collaboration will enable the generation of accurately aligned laser point clouds with minimal user input, at no additional cost to ILRIS customers.

Corbley Communications Inc. has released a Geospatial Newsmaker podcast, the first in its planned series of podcast interviews with influential members of the geospatial industry. The interview features Shawana Johnson, president of Global Marketing Insights Inc., discussing results of the 2005 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration International Remote Sensing Survey. The podcast, which is produced in a standard MP3 audio format, can be downloaded at www.corbleycommunications.com or www.globalinsights.com and played using Windows Media Player, Apple iTunes, or similar software.
